Business Spotlight:

ArtSpace Maynard on the Move…

ArtSpace is thrilled to announce its relocation to 74 Main Street in downtown Maynard. After months of uncertainties, we have found a space where we can continue and grow the legacy of ArtSpace.

All are welcome to these upcoming events:
Oct. 27th – Gallery Dedication
Dec. 2 – Open Studios during Holiday Stroll

Our new space houses 9 studios and 17 talented artists. The mediums our artists represent include painting, jewelry, ceramics, mix media and hats. In addition, we are excited to offer a Shared Workspace and our hallway Gallery, which will be formally dedicated on October 27th.

The last two years have brought challenges, but they’ve also showcased the strength and commitment of our Board Members. We owe a special debt of gratitude to Board President, Gail Erwin, whose tireless efforts have been instrumental in ensuring our survival.

The addition of Suchitra Mumford as Executive Director, in early 2023 was pivotal to steer ArtSpace out of the fog of uncertainty. With her entrepreneurial spirit and understanding of artists, she is aimed at increased engagement and sustainability.

We thank our supporters, artists, and the entire Maynard community. We look forward to offering opportunities for all to make, view and discuss art.

Artist of the Month Spotlight: Priscilla Cotter

Priscilla has been a member of ArtSpace Maynard since 2001 and was a founding member of the 6 Bridges Gallery on Main Street in Maynard. She is a children’s book illustrator and also does commissioned portraits, greeting cards and sculpted animal figurines, all of which are are available at the 6 Bridges Gallery. Her mediums are pencil, colored pencil, ink and watercolor.

Priscilla is a resident of Maynard having bought her “starter home’ back 1993. Both of her children attended the Maynard Schools and she was very involved in school activities including help to paint scenes for the high school plays. She founded the Maynard Knight Club (chess club) with help from Mark Malcolm and several volunteers. She also served as a member on the Maynard Cultural Council for six years. Her husband David served on the Conservation Commission.

Priscilla’s work can be found all around Maynard. She designed the logos for the Maynard Conservation Commission and the Maynard Education Foundation. She also worked with local artist Joyce Dwyer to paint the utility boxes in Maynard, two of which still exist, one at Alumni field and one at the corner of Main St and Great Road. Along with Carolyn Wirth she created the “Field Guide to Maynard”. Her newest project can be seen outside the Fine Arts Theatre where she designed and helped paint the new crosswalk.

ArtSpace Maynard is her second home and the ArtSpace community her extended family. After 22 years at 63 Summer St she recently moved into the new location at 74 Main Street. In 2022 she became a member of the ArtSpace Board of Directors. She’s thrilled that ArtSpace was able to find a new home in downtown Maynard.

Priscilla is currently displaying her work as part of a show called “Picture a Story” at the 6 Bridges Gallery along with three other local artists, including Maynard resident, and award winning illustrator, Chris Beatrice. The show features original art from their many books and runs until November 11th.

Priscilla has been a member of SCBWI (the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) since 2008 and is a current co-chair the Greater Boston Illustrators’ Group (GBIG). Her work has been shown at the Danforth Museum, LaSalle College, Pine Manor College, the Umbrella Arts Center, the Springfield Museum and the R. Michelson Gallery in Northampton.

Priscilla loves Maynard and all it has to offer. She frequently walks the Assabet River Rail Trail with her three-legged dog Phoebe and she will occasionally be seen carting her kayak from her home to the kayak launch at Ice House Landing. Last year she started playing pickleball with the Maynard Seniors (and of course designed a tshirt for the group).

A close friend and studio mate of Priscilla’s, Denise Shea, coined the phrase, “Maynard, the town that feels like a neighborhood”. That phrase really sums up Priscilla’s feelings about Maynard. A small but friendly community, it’s easy to get involved and to make friends all over town.

Advantage Testimonial: Jen Picorelli

When approached to write about my love of Maynard I have no shortage of words. My husband Joe and I have been here the majority of our lives. We were married here and soon after we welcomed our 3 children Piper, Phaydan and Paxton. We bought our first home here; it was one of our proudest accomplishments. All of the most important moments of our lives have taken place right here in Maynard.

I opened my home daycare here in 2006 as a way to stay home with our children and also work. I opened my business in July and placed my 1st ad in the local paper. It was the last ad I would ever need to place. Word of mouth and my reputation was all I needed in our small town. 15 years later and I have a 2 year wait list. Business is booming. 99%  of my clients live right here in town. They come to me around 12 weeks of age and in most cases I keep them until they continue on to Maynard schools. I still see all of the local kiddos who were in my daycare including my first batch of babies. They come over for special events and holidays. We go to their sporting events. It is an incredible privilege to be able to stay in these family’s lives even 15 years later. That doesn’t happen just anywhere.

Our downtown has a fabulous old school aesthetic with a modern day, artistic feel.  We have events in our little downtown that bring the whole town together. Music festivals, Maynardfest, downtown trick or treat,  holiday strolls, community bands concerts, our holiday parade (my personal favorite), a yearly menorah lighting and still there is more.

In Maynard you can take a walk before the sun even rises and walk around downtown and feel a sense of safety. As shops open for the day you will often get a good morning and wave from shop owners.

Go into Sanctuary; our local bar/function room, in downtown on any given night. If you do not know the person sitting next to you when you arrive, you will know them when you leave. It is a sense of community and belonging no matter where you are in life.

For me, loving Maynard and writing about Maynard will never be a challenge. Maynard is the type of town where whether your family  has been here for 3 weeks or  3 generations you can not get far without bumping into someone you know. It is the kind of town that when you move into a neighborhood your new neighbor will likely  bring you fresh baked cookies to welcome you. You can not get that everywhere, but you can get it here.

Stand in downtown, close your eyes and listen. The laughter, the conversations, the smell of popcorn coming from our theater. Maynard isn’t simply a town. It is not JUST where we live.  It’s an entire vibe.
