September 2023, Vol. 2

This month we are covering: A Fall Town classic – Special Town Meeting (STM)… an autumn celebration tradition…Where will our water be coming from tomorrow? … a downtown fixture for 73 years…

Around Town (Hall):

MAYNARD: The Select Board and Town Administrator Gregory Johnson are pleased to announce the appointment of Stephanie Duggan as the new Assistant Town Administrator. The Select Board appointed Duggan at its regular meeting on July 18.

“I am very impressed at what Stephanie provides to the Town and administration,” Town Administrator Johnson said. “As a lifelong resident and Town Hall staff member with substantial professional development accomplishments, she brings a wealth of knowledge about the community and municipal management. She has been integral in efforts to modernize the organization, especially toward the professional development of department heads. She is key to successful management of the people side of Town Hall, including negotiations with personnel and labor groups, as well as all recruiting and hiring. We look forward to seeing what she will be able to achieve in this new role.”

MAYNARD OUTDOOR STORE has been family owned and operated since 1950.  The store has evolved with the times, changing from selling war surplus to a store that carries clothing and footwear for boys, girls, women and men as well as sporting and camping equipment.  Maynard Outdoor specializes in casual and active clothing and footwear.

The footwear department offers a large selection of work, hiking and snow boots and athletic shoes and sandals.  The men’s department has casual clothing, jeans, and tee shirts, technical athletic apparel and outerwear and team apparel.  Women’s clothing is casual, comfortable, stylish and affordable.  Kids are outfitted for sports, school and outdoor adventures.

There is sporting equipment for soccer, baseball, hockey and basketball and hats and tees for Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots and Bruins fans.

Advantage Testimonial:

From a new resident Sarah Pryputniewicz:

My husband and I liked the small town feel of Maynard, with a distinct downtown area and relatively good walk ability. In the city, we had walked pretty much everywhere, and we wanted to have that option of being able to walk to the drugstore or post office for errands. The other towns we looked at didn’t have that same feel. Another thing we liked about Maynard, and what drew us ultimately here over Acton or Sudbury was …that it felt like a place where practical people live who want to have a big garden and do their own yard work. For most part, we found that to be true of our neighborhood.

Maynard is at the intersection of two state highways; it’s not exactly a hole in the wall. The theatre is an amenity that most small towns don’t have, for instance. Having a variety of restaurants can draw in people who miss the variety/breadth of restaurants available in the larger cities. (I love that I can walk to go out for Indian, Mexican, Korean, Thai, or Vietnamese fare; it’s the best of a larger city in a smaller town.)

We need to think about honoring the past in a way that doesn’t hold back the future. The mill buildings seem to be a success in this regard. The buildings have been maintained; they’re attractive open spaces for a lot of shops and offices. (I’d love to have a workspace with architecture and views like the mill has!)

I feel that Maynard still has so much potential with its location, walkability, compactness that should attract people to visit/want to move here. I don’t feel like the benefits of the rail trail have been advertised enough, and there aren’t any signs/maps (that I’ve seen) on the rail trail that would entice someone just passing through to stop and visit more of Maynard. Connections to the open spaces with trail maps/highlights of “must see” features would help bring people to town as well.

Volunteerism:

From Town Administrator Greg Johnson’s Report to the Select Board

What do people, paint and pedestrian crossings all have in common? Well for Maynard, they all came together on two summer nights to bring to life the artwork of two local Maynard artists, Priscilla Alpaugh and Emma Ryan.
Under the care, leadership and organization of local artist and town volunteer extraordinaire, Andy Moerlein, the crosswalks outside of the Maynard Fine Arts Theatre were transformed into public art.

Both nights were fun filled with scores of volunteers stepping up to help layout, paint and clean up under the spotlights, all the while
navigating traffic with the help of our local police. There was music, dancing, and great camaraderie with everyone talking about art, friends and what a great community Maynard is. Submitted by Stephen Smith
